Should I start lowering the gain on the LC2i first or the amp first?

That's definitely good to know! I turned down the gain and audibly and physically could hear the subwoofer get quieter and not hit as hard. Even when the sub was barely moving, the amp would go into protect mode.

I admire anybody that considers themselves a "grandpa" and has an amazing audio system! Goes to show that audiophiles don't die with age!

The gain is way down, well below the point of clipping/distortion on both the LC2i and the amp and the HU. The ground is solid...no paint under the connection point and it's tight.

That's a smart idea! If it still heats up and goes to protect mode, what would be the problem?

My Audi is getting some bodywork done right now, but when it gets back, I will read the voltage drop at the amp. That's one measurement I didn't take.
