I know to use 50Hz for subs and 1KHz for comps. Wondering more along the lines of using 0, -3, -6, or maybe even -10dB tones....I guess I wasn't too clear.

The subject pretty much says it all. Leaning towards -3dB for the comps and -6dB for my sub. Also, if I go -6dB and there is clipping, it should only be at or near the volume I set the gain at correct?

What is the difference between the test tones at the top and the test tones posted by Jmac. Are they all sine waves?

So you run the sine waves and watch the output for the highest output. Then you adjust this level up or down depending on where you want your voltage output to be? I also use my auto-eq and have been wondering how to tackle this issue... I'm assuming by the range that you use this approach...

I like that approach. What sine waves do you recommend using to set gains this way?

when you guys set your gains did you keep the processing that you use on? It just doesn't make sense to me to turn everything to 0 and all processing off and then set the gains...

If the amp is rated 160 x 2 @ 4ohms bridged don't I want to set the gains to 25.3 volts?

I listen to pretty much everything BUT rap. Think I should use -6dB test tone? I'm not sure how comfortable I feel about going any lower.

At what volume level did you set your gains....just set mine @ 47, but I'm thinking I might go a bit lower....any add/disadvantages to this?

To set my sub I used a 50Hz test tone @ 0dB. I'm debating going through again and setting them all at -3dB. Why do you say to set it at -6dB? It's a 12" Fi Q in a sealed enclosure getting about ~1000 watts.

I went to set my gains with a dmm. With the car running and the gains to 0 my dmm was reading 6.1volts. The amp is a US Amps Merlin MD41 and channels 1&2 and 3&4 are bridged for my front components. Can someone explain to me why this is happening, whether it's right or wrong? From...

I have the same thing going on. My install guy told me that it was normal. Not sure I believe that, but I'd like to know too.
