correct wire size?

I have a 6 channel 450W amp powering my front speakers and 2 subwoofers. When I had it installed, they told me that 8 gauge would be enough. They also said that I will only need to upgrade to 4 gauge if I wanted to run my rear speakers with the amp also. Does this sound right? If I want to run my rear speakers as well, must I upgrade? How do I know if the wire is big enough?

Thanks

amp = JL e6450

(channels 3,4 5,6 bridged)
