I would like to get a nice size sub for my home theatre and some speakers...Im confused on how you hook a sub up..I know you need an amp..But how do you power the amp? Do they have amps that plug inoto normal plugs? Im kinda new to this stuff so let me know please

Yes, you can use a plate amplifier to power your sub, like the ones found here. It uses normal 120v power outlet. You connect it to your reciever via either RCA or Speaker-level inputs.

there is a rca preout on most home theater receivers, you hook that to the rca input on a sub and you plug the sub into the wall and turn it on

So i could buy one of those plate amps...run my subs to that..then rca cables from there to the reciever, and plug that amp in?
