Can anyone explain the advantage of a 8 layer VC over a 4 layer ?

Larger coils are going to hold more power before thermal failure. You may also be gaining mass enough to lower Fs to some more desirable point.

Major disadvantage is that magnetic field strength follows an inverse square relationship to distance so when you widen the gap to accommodate these big fat coils you're exponentially losing motor force.
