comps or no?

Alright please don't flame, but a component speaker is a speaker and a tweeter combined right? So what is the advantage of this over a speaker and tweeter seperate? Wouldn't they each get more power if they are seperate?

edit: The speaker size I need is 5 1/4 if that makes a difference.

a coax (coaxial) is the mid and tweet togetherm typically powered by the same chanel of an amp or deckm with no, or simple capacitor as a low db high pass xover for the tweet.

comps (component), are seperate mid and tweet. They can be run either active or passive for the xover, either using one or 2 channels of an amp per side.

yes comps

the comps sound alot better.

Power doesnt dictate how well a speaker sounds

Great explanation, man. Co-axials can also be just a full-range speaker that has a tweeter inside the magnet, or something like that. Not really sure of the mechanics behind it. But, the tweet doesn't always have to be mounted ontop of it.

However, components are usually a lot better quality than coaxials.

And, like he said, co-axials are usually powered by a simple, relatively weak power source, such as a head unit, while components handle more power (The normal is 100 watts RMS), and are normally a lot better sound quality and build quality.

However, don't be afraid to just stay with coaxials. But if you get a strong sub stage, you'll probably want to get a nice pair of components, or a 3-way front stage (mid-low, mid-high, and high drivers) to make the sound quality nice and full, so you can actually hear the song, instead of just hearing bass.

EDIT:: Also, component systems come with a passive-crossover. What this does is, you run a single channel into the + and - of this crossover, then it has pegs for the mid and the high drivers, and it seperates the signals, and send it to the right driver.

comps are mor flexable as far as getting good staging and imaging, but the can be a pain in the ass if your not the handy type, especially when you get into 3 way comps. I would reserve 3ways to more experianced installers.

there are good coax that can be bi amped just like comps, but are obviously easier to install

Well, I say yes and no to this statement.

Yes, because, for the most part, co-axials pop right into the old speaker's holder.

But, no, because all you really need to install a tweeter is a hole saw... most tweeters (all I've worked with) come with "Surface mount" holders, which you just have to screw one or two holes and then install.

But, I will concur that 3-way systems should be reserved for experienced installers. Getting good imaging with ANYTHING is pretty tough, but it has a lot of variables, the main one, of course, being the car.

I still want to put a pair of mid-bass in my center console, each aimed at the driver / passenger.

That would sound so good //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/drool.gif.b5e863e893038027711d4402f340dad0.gif
