If I want to test an amp with my battery just to make sure it's not DOA, do I need

to connect a wire from the + on the battery to the remote turn on, as well as making connections from +- on battery to the +- on the amp? I will eventually get a 12V power supply for bench testing but don't have one at the moment and just want to make sure this amp powers up.

 
Yes. Would be well worth getting some small fuses as well. .3 amp for rem turnon and say 10A for the main power. IF the amp is damaged you don't want fire and 10A would be plenty for a quick sound check.
