2/3/4 channel amp used as subwoofer amp

If you want to think of it as being "wasted" it is as it's not being used. You have four channels in your amp, for argument let's say 50 watts per channel (200 total) into 4 ohms. Let's also assume into a 2 ohm load you have 75 watts per channel (300 total). Channel 1 & 2 can be combined into a 4 ohm mono load combining their output to 150 watts (each channel still sees 2 ohm or half the mono load) whereas channels 3 & 4 are ready to perform in the same manner. If you don't put a load on channels 3 & 4 they sit idle but can't give their unused power back to channels 1 & 2. You will see the advantage of reduced current and heat from only running half the amp.
