I have two mtx thunder 4000 ten inchers...400 watts a piece...how many watts in an amp do i need?

Add the RMS of the two subs and look for an amp that is close to the combined RMS power

if the subs are SVC then find either a mono block like the Crossfire BMF 400.1 or if the are DVC then you can find an amp that puts out about 800 watts bridged.
