I cut the factory harness but left enough wire to reconnect his factory radio in the event that I couldn't figure it out. Which I did end up doing until I figure out what I'm doing wrong.

I'm not sure if this answers your question but if you're talking about bass, EQ, treble, etc on the head unit. Those should be zeroed out or turned off when you tune with a DMM
