I wouldnt mess with a DMM at all for the moment .See if the amplifier kicks back on at a normal operation state to see if it goes back into protect or not. If it does. I would remove that amp and Bench test it or have it bench tested
 
The only way I see it sparking is if you had your meter set to measure current. That would short the terminals, put your amp into protect, and blow the meter fuse.
