when does too much headroom...

Well if you have a few extra hundred watts of headroom on the amp, and some subs that can handle a little above their rated wattage, you have some room to play with when you want to get a little "extra loud" //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

There's no such thing as too much headroom. IMHO you buy as much CLEAN POWER as you can afford without going over budget. My setup is a good example:

tweets are seeing 175watts each

4" mids seeing 175watts each

6.5" midbass seeing 400watts each

12" subs seeing 500watts each

Am I ever using this much power when I listen to music? No. But when there are big dynamic swings in the music I know that my amps will never max out and clip because I have TONS in reserve. Just my .02 on the subject.

You're not going to know until you test with a meter. Typically even carpeting a box as opposed to painting is going to lose a few tenths.
