In most experiences, including mine, you will gain lower end extension and output when the mounted drivers are facing the trunk opening of the car, or rear. In order for bass waves to be enhanced, they need surfaces to bounce off of, the more the merrier.

I vote sealed. I am a fan of drivers that perform well in sealed alignments. This way you get the best of both worlds; the ability to play loud and yet have really crisp and precise sound quality with good transient response.

I heard one Type X 12 in a one cube or so sealed box and it was orgasmic, actually. Really hard hitting, yet smooth lows. Very smooth sound to it and was fairly loud. Dont remember what it was powered by.
